Sewing Pattern Review

Before purchasing your pattern, there is some information you will need to gather.
  •  All clothing patterns have a sizing chart listed on the back of the pattern.  Therefore, before purchasing the correct pattern size, you will need to gather the correct measurements.   Many patterns now have more than one size listed in the pattern, so if the measurements are not exact to the pattern, you will have some fluctuation with sizing of your pattern.  You want to purchase the pattern closest to the measurements taken.
  • All patterns have suggested fabrics types for the sewing project.  You will need to review this to make sure this is what you were wanting in the outcome of the project.  It will also identify what fabrics should not be used.  This can be suggested for various reasons.  If you are a beginning seamstress, you should follow these guidelines until it is understood what fabrics can be utilized for what projects.

After your pattern selection, then you will need to purchase your materials listed on the back of the pattern.
  • Identify which item is listed.  Some patterns identify with View A, View B, etc and some others will just list the Blouse, Jacket, etc.
  • Fabrics are in different widths.  Look at the fabric width and compare to the pattern as to how much needs to be purchased.  To determine the purchased amount, look at the size based on the previous step with measurements.
Example:  If size 12 is the closest size and the fabric width the 44/45', it will list what yardage you will need to purchase.

Notions that will need to be purchase for the sewing project are also listed on the back of the pattern

Look for the section that is named notions.  Items such as polyester thread, shoulder pads, 7 inch zipper, 6 1/2 inch buttons, seam binding, stretch lace, bra cups, fusible or non-fusible interfacing, 1 inch wide elastic, 1 inch wide hook, etc.  All notions listed on the pattern will need to be purchased to complete the sewing project.
