Sewing Alterations

Simple Alterations

  •  button replacement - This alteration can be completed either by hand sewing or machine sewing, depending on the button type.  Make sure the fabric has not been torn underneath the button.  If it has, you will need to reinforce the fabric before sewing on the button in the same area the previous button placement.  This needs to line up with the button holes on the item so it does not pucker the fabric.

  • hemming -  There are several different types of hemming that can occur.  Some items have a lining that will also require hemming.  Hemming can be completed by hand sewing or machine sewing.  Prior to hemming, look at how the item was hemmed previously.  This gives you an idea on how the item should be hemmed.  More professional hemming requires a blind stitch approach so the item does not show the hem.

Intermediate Experience Alterations

This requires experience in seamstress abilities.  Knowing how items are put together and pattern sizing is essential to know what the next steps are to take in alterations

  • Reduction (taking in) of an item - This step is handled by trying on the item to be reduced or body measurements.  Pins are utilized to fit or measurements utilized to resize the item
  • Expanding (taking out) of an item -  This requires review of the seam allowance in the areas of expansion.  If there are clipped seam allowances, then expanding of the product with the original item's fabric will not be possible.   Some items are made to expand like men's dress pants have the ability to expand the waist.  This all takes examination.

Formal Alterations

Many formal gowns or men's wear are already made with the alteration abilities in mind.  These are more challenging due to the additional embellishments.  Recommendend having all alterations for formal attire to be completed by a professional.
